Music blogs have more or less been around since the advent of the Web, existing essentially as an outlet for music lovers to discuss what they love most: music. In this first decade of the 21st century, however, the aim and purpose of the music blog has changed. Music blogs have developed into a whole new monster: sometimes a place for mp3s to be shared, whether they be a new single by a popular band or a remix of a popular, a place to rant about why such and such band is the greatest or the worst, a place to post the latest music video, a place for Top X lists, and sometimes a place to address issues entirely unrelated to music but rather pop culture phenomenons that in some strange way may or may not tie into the music world.
A significant amount of hype is created by music blogs due to their loyal followings which then create the “overnight hype sensation.” Bands with a small, local fan base of no more than one hundred or so friends morph into the next big thing because someone posts a demo of theirs on a prominent music blog. In a way, this type of freak promotion is undercutting the record companies and directly reaching listeners without any middleman.
Through questing various music blogs, I will exhibit these issues and the general attitudes towards the purpose of the modern music blog. What results will come from visiting these music blogs? What does the future of music blogging hold for its current basis of followers? Join me to find out.
